How RAGE and SAFe Can Coexist

SAFe is a widely accepted formula for understanding and managing Agile development enterprise-wide. RAGE is cPrime’s proprietary method for governing Agile enterprise-wide.

Can these two mighty acronyms coexist in harmony in your organization?

They certainly can, and here’s why:

What SAFe Is

SAFe stands for Scaled Agile Framework for the Enterprise.

The Scaled Agile Framework is a proven, publicly-facing framework for applying Lean and Agile practices at enterprise scale. This framework synchronizes alignment, collaboration and delivery in the enterprise and scales successfully to large numbers of practitioners and teams. At the roots of the Scaled Agile Framework is a deep focus on iterative and incremental development, Agile development, product development flow, lean thinking and field experience at enterprise scale.

We didn’t invent SAFe, but we definitely stand behind its usage. SAFe offers a clear, understandable, and mobile framework for scaling Agile in any size organization. It allows for both top-down and bottom-up Agile scaling, which is especially important since every organization begins their Agile journey from a different starting point.

One of the key strengths of following the SAFe framework is that it has become universally understood and accepted. Nearly anyone who has any experience working or leading in an Agile environment will be familiar with it, and will be able to hit the ground running should they change jobs, receive a promotion or reassignment, or transfer.

This becomes especially clear in short-term staffing situations where Agile experts will often find themselves moving from one organization to the next rapidly, but will always have this common ground to stand on.

What RAGE Is

RAGE stands for Recipes for Agile Governance in the Enterprise.

Large enterprises cannot function without structure, but often develop structures that cripple productivity and impair responsiveness. RAGE enables rapid decisions, based on lightweight artifacts developed with minimum effort and is applicable to any process (Agile, Plan-Driven, Hybrid, etc.). Agile Governance is adaptable, not rigidly prescriptive, which enables solution architects to help craft a custom “recipe” to optimize processes at every level of your organization.

The “recipes” the RAGE process creates are unique to each organization, team, or business unit, not universal even within one organization, much less across organizations.

Why RAGE and SAFe Can Coexist

RAGE is not a framework that can or should be used in lieu of – or, really, apart from – SAFe. It’s not intended to provide a universal platform on which to build a scaled Agile process that every organization will recognize and benefit from.

Rather, RAGE focuses on the unique differences in each organization. It enables trained Agile professionals to build specific processes and work flows that will work best for their unique circumstances within the overarching SAFe framework.

So, while Agile professionals can change position within an organization, or even change employers, and still easily find and understand their role in the SAFe framework, they will certainly need to grow accustomed to a new set of RAGE processes in order to enjoy optimal work flow performance in their new positions.

For help integrating SAFe and RAGE into your organization’s work flows, we’d be delighted to offer training, coaching, and staff augmentation services customized to your company’s specific needs.
